Statement of Intent

For my two 30 second adverts, I intend to showcase 2 main characters representing 2 social groups for my reality TV show, Smart VS Stupid. The name has been chosen to create controversy which helps to advertise the show, while also not being too controversial or misleading so it still fits with ASA guidelines. I aim to interlink my 2 adverts by following the same characters and focussing largely on the same story.

The first, Finley, will be a student who is struggling with his responsibilities in day to day school. He will find it difficult to fit in with his peers, and this can be shown through the mise-en-scรจne by having shots of him excluded from conversations or sitting further away from others. The advert will not specify explicitly why Finley is struggling, but it will suggest that he has maybe been failed by the school system as the teachers are seen giving more attention to the higher performing students.  I intend to show this with a shot of Finley in the foreground with his head on the desk, clearly finding his work difficult, and other more able students being aided by the teacher in the background.

This will then be juxtaposed by Jack, who is an energetic and thriving student who enjoys school and finds fitting in easy. I will use colour grading and high-key lighting to make Jack’s shots look brighter and more colourful than Finley’s low-key lighting and desaturated look, which will help the audience understand how they are supposed to be feeling. I don't intend to focus on either of the student's home lives, as I believe this is something that parents and younger audiences alike will find uninteresting as they see it themselves day in day out.

I aim for this Reality TV show to try and be as comedic as possible, while also being able to showcase some of the more serious problems facing schools and the people who work/attend them on a day to day basis, including social isolation and bullying. The aim would be to make it interesting to a younger age range through comedy (16 and under) while also focusing on real issues that people over that age group will care about. The show would be on around 5-6pm, so that it was available to both a younger and older demographic. The younger audience can also sympathise with the students and relate to them, whereas an older audience can see what schools are like get insight on their child’s education or compare it to theirs. It would also link to cultivation theory, as the media want people to see teenagers as disruptive and disrespectful, so showcasing this would help to reinforce the views they already have, however I also intend to show that not all students who misbehave are doing so without cause, and I will try to give a story from their perspective as well. This will ensure I adhere to the rules of the ASA, while also making good use of humour and representation.
